Horseback Riding Near Denver, CO

Looking for horseback riding near Denver, CO that feels like a true Colorado adventure? At Rusty Spurr Ranch, we offer guided trail rides and cattle drives just outside the city in beautiful Kremmling, Colorado — where wide-open landscapes, mountain views, and authentic western riding come together.

Located about 2.5 to 3 hours from Denver (depending on traffic and mountain conditions), our ranch sits on over 10,000 acres of scenic terrain. Riders explore wildflower-filled meadows, peaceful aspen groves, and rolling mountain trails — all while enjoying a more natural riding experience. Unlike typical nose-to-tail rides, we encourage guests to “Get Outta Line” when terrain allows, giving you the freedom to truly connect with your horse and surroundings.

Denver Horseback Trail Rides FAQ

Do you provide transportation from Denver to Rusty Spurr Ranch?

We get this question a lot from guests planning a trip from Denver. While we’d love to offer transportation, our remote location and small team make it difficult to coordinate rides to and from the ranch.

Rusty Spurr Ranch is located in Kremmling, Colorado—about 2.5 to 3 hours from Denver—and there are no reliable public transportation options that reach the area. Ride-share services like Uber or Lyft may show up, but availability is inconsistent and pricing can be very high for mountain travel. Most guests visiting from Denver choose to drive their own vehicle or rent a car so they can fully enjoy the scenic drive and nearby mountain towns.

Is there an age minimum for horseback riding near Denver at your ranch?

Yes—our horseback riding experiences near Denver follow specific age requirements for safety and insurance reasons. Riders must be at least 8 years old to participate in trail rides and at least 12 years old for cattle drives.

Children under 13 must ride with an adult on trail rides, and those under 15 must be accompanied by an adult during cattle drives. These guidelines are strictly enforced to ensure a safe experience for both riders and horses.

While children under 8 are not able to ride, families traveling from Denver are still welcome to visit. Our cabin offers indoor and outdoor seating, and younger kids can enjoy the open space, short walks, horseshoes, and our roping dummy area with an adult present.

What should I wear for horseback riding near Denver, CO?

If you’re heading out for horseback riding near Denver, dress for comfort—not style. This is a true outdoor experience, and you should expect a little dirt along the way.

We recommend:

  • Long pants (jeans or similar)
  • Closed-toe, closed-heel shoes like sneakers or cowboy boots
  • Weather-appropriate layers (Colorado weather can change quickly)
  • A hat that stays on in the wind

A few things to avoid:

  • Shorts (they can lead to chafing and scratches)
  • High heels or sandals of any kind
  • Heavy hiking boots with aggressive tread
  • Spurs (leave those to the wranglers)

We also provide rain gear on every saddle just in case the weather rolls in, so you’ll be prepared no matter what your Colorado adventure brings.
